Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé apologized to the people of China for his comment about Mao Zedong, the country’s former leader.
The Frenchman’s statement sparked outrage in China, and two major brands—Dongpeng and Mengniu—ended their partnerships with the footballer.
"My comment was thoughtless. I understand that it hurt many people in China and around the world. I apologize to everyone I offended,” the forward said.
The scandal erupted after a video circulated online in which Mbappé spoke about a meme showing his face superimposed on an image of Mao Zedong.
In China, jokes about the country’s former leader are considered an extremely sensitive topic.
🚨 Kylian Mbappé: "My favorite Mbappé meme? The one where they put my face on a Chinese dictator (Mao Zedong). That really makes me laugh, I use it with my friends all the time." https://t.co/oKmH8xksLy
