Lamine Yamal's uncle publicly expressed his disappointment over the Ballon d'Or being awarded to Harry Kane.
Although the Barcelona talent himself seemed to have come to terms with finishing third in the main award category, his uncle, Abdoul Abdellaoui, was extremely dissatisfied with the result.
Giving an emotional interview to the radio show El Larguero, he did not hide his anger.
"To be honest, it is very sad. It really hurts me a lot.
My nephew was fantastic; he was the best footballer in the world—everyone knows that. If you like football, you go to watch Lamine, not Harry Kane.
The Englishman is a great goalscorer, but Lamine is the best player, the one who shines on the pitch.
He was unlucky this time, but there will be other years soon.”
Abdellaoui also suggested that Yamal's age may have had a negative impact on the voting results.
"Because Lamine is young, he is constantly told that he still has time, that he is only 19 years old. That is precisely why they do not give him this award,” the footballer's uncle added.
"Harry has only three years left on the pitch, so they seem to think they need to say: ‘Well, all right, let's give him this award.’”
