Will "Kauno Žalgiris” secure a second consecutive "Toplyga” championship title on Monday?
A week ago, the team from the temporary capital claimed a hugely important victory in Marijampolė and moved clear of its closest rivals with 54 points.
A win on Monday would secure a second consecutive championship title, while a draw would eliminate "Žalgiris” from contention and theoretically leave Marijampolė’s "Sūduva”, which will return to "Toplyga” action next week, in the race for gold.
"Kauno Žalgiris” looked shaky in defence against Bergen’s "Brann” on Thursday, but according to head coach Željko Sopić, greater emphasis will be placed on Monday’s clash, which could deliver another trophy.
"Žalgiris” ended its home campaign in style and climbed to second place after an excellent victory over "Hegelmann”. The Green and Whites could remain in that position if they win in Kaunas and either "Sūduva” or "TransINVEST” suffers at least one defeat.
However, the Vilnius side has not shone away from home, with its most recent victory at an opponent’s stadium coming three months ago. After head coach Andrius Skerla moved Stanislav Bilenkyi into the striker’s position in the starting line-up, the Ukrainian himself made an impact, while both Paulius Golubickas and Matas Vareika also began to show improved form. The latter scored in both of the previous two matches.
"Kauno Žalgiris” vs Vilnius "Žalgiris”. October 26, 6:45 p.m. Kaunas, Darius and Girėnas Stadium. Previous matches: 3–0, 0–1, 2–3.
