Former England captain David Beckham has unexpectedly been named among the potential candidates for the FIFA presidency.

Reports suggest that some European football officials are seeking an alternative to the organisation’s current president, Gianni Infantino, whose leadership is facing mounting criticism.

According to Sky Sport Germany, Beckham’s potential candidacy has been discussed within UEFA and the German Football Association.

However, the Englishman has not yet publicly expressed any desire to stand in the election.

Dissatisfaction with Infantino grew particularly following a controversial FIFA commercial project that sought to transfer part of the organisation’s business to private investors. The project was ultimately scrapped, but it raised questions about transparency and decision-making within FIFA.

Beckham is considered an attractive candidate due to his global profile, long playing career and experience in the football business. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star also helped establish Inter Miami.

However, the Englishman is not the only potential challenger to Infantino. Other names under consideration include Arsène Wenger, Luís Figo and other prominent figures in the football world.

The FIFA presidential election is scheduled to take place in Morocco on 18 March 2027, and candidates must be nominated by 18 November 2026. To stand in the election, a candidate must secure the support of at least five FIFA member associations.
