The crumbling structures that had long marred the appearance of the plot at 105A Europos Avenue are now a thing of the past – work on underground utility networks is beginning on the cleared site. In the next few years, the country’s most modern football and rugby arena will be built here.

"Aleksotas is experiencing a genuine breakthrough – from the airfield to ALEX Kaunas Innovation Park. In the coming years, there will also be no shortage of sports activities here, from football to swimming. Some projects are already under way, while others are in the immediate plans.

I have no doubt that these modern spaces will serve not only professional athletes but also residents who want to spend their free time meaningfully,” says Kaunas Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis.

Preparatory work for the construction of the nearly 17,000-square-metre football and rugby arena in Aleksotas, on Europos Avenue, began in September this year. The old, abandoned structures were demolished on the site first.

Heavy machinery is currently operating here: earthworks are being carried out and sewer networks are being laid. The construction of the building’s foundations will follow.

The A++ energy-efficiency-class sports complex will comprise three floors and a basement. The 28-metre-high building will house a 105-metre-long and 68-metre-wide artificial-turf football and rugby pitch. It will meet the standards required for official matches.

One of the most modern sports facilities of its kind in Lithuania will also have stands for 1,000 spectators, as well as premises for athletes, referees, medical staff and the administration.

The multifunctional sports facility will feature outdoor terraces, offering a picturesque panorama of the Aleksotas airfield.

A 158-space car park is planned right next to the facility, along with separate spaces for buses.

The design proposals and technical design for the 3.23-hectare plot at 105A Europos Avenue were prepared by Maspro.

The work is being carried out by Infes, which won the public procurement contract. Construction is expected to be completed within two years of its start.
