This idea was first publicly mentioned by the head of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) Alejandro Dominguez. He announced the 64-team championship with a post on social media, despite the lack of official confirmation.

Dominguez confirmed this idea to the "Sky News" channel.

The South American football leader supports this decision with the desire to see the group stage in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay. According to the initial plan, these countries were supposed to open the championship only with one match in each country. If the championship expands to 64 teams, it is possible to hold one group in the mentioned countries of the region. This plan is in line with the 100-year anniversary of the championship.

The remaining championship will be organized by Morocco, Portugal, and Spain in any case. The final is expected to take place in the latter country.
