"Manchester City” won the first derby of this season against "Manchester United” on Sunday with a minimal score of 1:0.
Although "City” played with one player less from the 23rd minute, Erling Haaland still sent the ball into the net in the 60th minute. Initially, an offside was called, but after a VAR review, the goal was allowed.
However, after the match, it became clear that VAR made a wrong decision and the goal should have been disallowed.
It turned out that VAR focused on E. Haaland's position, and the Norwegian was indeed not offside. However, his teammate Enzo Fernández was offside as he actively attempted to play the ball, thus an offside should have been called.
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) also acknowledged their mistake after the match.
In that same attack, E. Fernández was in an offside position, but he did not play the ball. However, VAR did not properly assess his involvement in the attack, making the offside decision subjective. VAR should have advised the match referee to review the situation and assess it himself.
After the match, contact was made with representatives of "Manchester United,” and the error in assessing the situation was acknowledged. An investigation into this incident will be launched soon,” wrote PGMOL in a statement.
