The English Premier League will trial a new rule in the upcoming season aimed at further curbing time-wasting.

The league officially announced that from the upcoming season, an additional rule will apply exclusively to goalkeepers. If a goalkeeper requests medical assistance during the match, their teammate will have to leave the field for one minute.

As a reminder, according to the new football rules, this practice has already been applied to field players at the World Cup, but there is no such rule for goalkeepers. However, the Premier League received IFAB's permission to adapt this rule for its league.

However, if a goalkeeper needs assistance after a foul or a collision with an opponent or teammate, this rule will not apply. It also will not apply if the goalkeeper is bleeding.

The Premier League justifies this rule based on last season's practice, where goalkeepers frequently requested medical assistance, thereby allowing coaches to convey information to the team or simply slowing down the pace of the match.
