"Wolfsburg" felt for the first time in its history what it means to be relegated from the league.
In the second playoff match for a spot in the Bundesliga, "Paderborn" defeated "Wolfsburg" 2:1.
Dženanas Pejčinović gave the visitors the lead in the third minute. However, the situation soon became complicated when Joakim Maehle received a yellow card in the 14th minute, leaving the leading team with nine players.
The pressure increased, and Filip Bilbija scored in the 38th minute.
"Paderborn" secured the victory only in extra time when Laurinas Curda settled the matters. His goal came in the 100th minute of the match.
"Wolfsburg" will not play in the Bundesliga for the first time in its 29 years of existence.
This year, players such as Denis Vavro, Jesper Lindström, Mattias Svanberg, Kamil Grabara, and Christian Eriksen played for "Wolfsburg." On the last day of the Bundesliga season, they defeated "St. Pauli," but stumbled in the series against "Paderborn."
