In historical terms, the mighty football nation Uruguay faced a fiasco at the 2026 World Cup.

In the final group match, Marcelo Bielsa's team lost 0:1 to the Spanish national team.

In the 42nd minute, the only goal of the match was scored by Alex Baena. In the situation leading up to the goal, veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera made a significant error and was substituted at halftime.

The Uruguayan team struggled to create chances, and ultimately the score remained unchanged.

The 1930 and 1950 World Champions collected only 2 points in this tournament, drawing with Green Whistle and Saudi Arabia, and failed to advance to the knockout stage.

Spain finished first in the group.
