The Portugal national football team started the UEFA Nations League tournament with a victory.

In the A division group 4 match held in Lisbon, the Portuguese defeated the Welsh footballers 1:0.

The only goal of the match came in the 22nd minute. Nuno Mendes broke down the left flank and passed the ball to João Félix, who struck from around 20 meters to beat the Welsh goalkeeper Danny Ward.

In the 59th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo sent the ball into the net, but after a VAR review, the goal was disallowed for offside.

The Welsh team's attack struggled – the guests hardly threatened the goal protected by Diogo Costa.

For the Portugal team, this was the first official match under the new head coach Jorge Jesus. In the next Nations League match, the Portuguese will meet Norway away on September 27.
