While Lionel Messi is striving for another World Cup title with the Argentina national team, one of his compatriots is rushing to complete a gigantic statue of the football star in the middle of the Patagonian desert.

"We are doing this because he deserves it,” said artist Aldo Beroisa.

A former railroad worker and local artist for over a year, whose work features several dinosaur and Jesus statues, he cut and welded old oil pipeline pipes in the desert dust, shaping them into a steel Messi skeleton.

Now, the 26-meter tall, 70-ton statue, covered in shiny white paint, towers above the remote town of Kutral Co, making children gaze in awe and motorcyclists stop for selfies.

Reports say the statue cost the town about 130,000 US dollars.
