The Ecuador national team created one of the biggest surprises of the World Cup.

The South American team defeated Germany 2:1 in the decisive E Group match and advanced to the tournament's knockout stage.

After the impressive victory, Ecuador's president Daniel Noboa declared a day off on Friday.

"Thank you to the players and the coach, who, despite criticism, insults, and a difficult period, managed to bounce back and bring immense joy to the entire country. Tomorrow – a celebration!” – wrote the politician.

In the World Cup knockout stage, Ecuadorians will face the Mexico national team.
