Sweden in a Strange Situation after Kosovo's Downfall, Fighting for a Spot in the World Championship © AFP

The main UEFA qualifying campaign for the World Cup is going poorly for Sweden, but the back doors exist.

On Monday, the Scandinavian team lost 0:1 at home to Kosovo.

With 2 rounds remaining until the end of the group stage, Sweden is 2 points behind 2nd place, which allows for the continuation of their qualifying journey. That spot is currently held by the same Kosovo team.

However, Sweden performed well in the UEFA Nations League, so they should secure a spot in the decisive playoffs, like other teams that finished second in their groups.

San Marino and Moldova could also secure their places there – the two teams that performed the best in League D of the Nations League. However, Moldova needs Romania to be among the top two in their group, while San Marino also requires success from other teams in their groups – potentially one from either Wales or Northern Ireland.

After the window in November, it will become clear which teams will compete for crucial spots in March.

Switzerland confidently holds the first place in Sweden's group.
