In the past, famous Russian footballer Andrey Kanchelskis shared his thoughts on the possibility of strengthening ties in sports with Ukraine in the future.

According to the man born in Ukraine and of Lithuanian descent, after the ongoing war, friendly football matches should be organized.

"When everything is over, I would like to see a match between Russia and Ukraine. I think many people feel the same way."

"For many, they are still brotherly countries. My mother, like many friends, lives in Ukraine. Of course, now we are hostages of the situation. We can only talk about sports, but not about politics,” Kanchelskis explained.

The last time both countries played was at the end of the last century when a qualifying match for the European Championship in Moscow ended in a 1:1 draw.
