Messages of condolence have been posted on social media by both clubs and famous players.

"It's hard to believe. It feels like we just played together in the national team, you recently celebrated your wedding. I send my condolences to your family, wife, and children. I wish them strength. I know you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre. We will miss you," wrote forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

The "Liverpool" team stated:

"The club has been informed that the 28-year-old footballer died alongside his brother Andre in a traffic accident in Spain. 'Liverpool' will not provide further comments at this time and asks to respect the privacy of Diogo and Andre's families, friends, teammates, and club staff as they try to cope with this unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with comprehensive support."

"This is heartbreaking news. I am sure I speak for everyone when I say that first and foremost we extend our condolences to his family and friends. Millions of 'Liverpool' fans, other football fans, and beyond will be shocked by this news. It is painful and very important to remember how difficult this time will be for his friends and family," said UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
