The Lithuanian national football team remains winless in the qualifying rounds for the 2026 World Cup.
On Thursday, the Lithuanians avoided defeat in the last minutes of the match in Kaunas against Malta – the game ended in a draw, 1:1.
After the match, team captain Justas Lasickas acknowledged that such games show the level at which the Lithuanian national team currently stands.
"A realistic result. It showed our level. We can imagine that we should be a head better or that it would be easy here, the cliché that everyone knows how to play football. They are also a good team.
The Maltese club plays in the UEFA Europa Conference League, while the Lithuanian team does not play there from the A league. Simple things. If we imagined it would be easy, they showed from the first minutes that it wouldn’t be. Of course, the match could have gone either way, but it is what it is.
There were no worst thoughts, and that was reflected on the pitch. Frustrated, a lot of negativity, but at least the positive takeaway is that we didn’t give up. No matter how it was, we fought until the end and earned that point. In better situations, we could have gotten three points. So at least there is positivity here – that this team keeps its head up and tries. But we have to be better,” the team captain is quoted by the portal "Lrt.lt.”
