On Thursday evening, Vilnius "Žalgiris" faces a challenge in the UEFA Conference League qualification - in the second round matches, the Žalgiris players will encounter the Northern Irish champions "Linfield".
As in 2021, the visiting players are guided by head coach David Healy.
The opponent's coach evaluated the Žalgiris players
Before the upcoming match, D. Healy did not hide his respect for the future opponent. According to him, "Žalgiris" remains a formidable team with strong players.
"We tried to do as much homework as possible. "Žalgiris" is a well-coached team by a strategist. We expect a tough match,” said the coach.
He highlighted the attacking line of the Vilnius team, paying special attention to one player.
"They are still a very good team. Many very good players in attack. Liviu Antal has stood out in the last few matches, so he should step into this one with confidence,” evaluated D. Healy.
Remembers the 2021 duel
D. Healy also recalled the previous meeting of the teams in the UEFA Champions League qualification in 2021. According to him, the situation is a little different now, but the same challenges remain significant.
"Last time we played against "Žalgiris" in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. It's difficult, as "Žalgiris" has already played a series of matches in the domestic championship. This year they are not at the top of the league table, but that doesn't mean they are a bad team. They are the champions of last season,” the coach reminded.
He emphasized that significant respect is given to the Žalgiris players.
"The team is on the same path, in the qualifying stage as we are. We give great respect to our opponents. We have worked for several days and tomorrow we will try to be the best version of ourselves,” stated D. Healy.
Believes in his game plan
The "Linfield" strategist acknowledged that everything will depend on how well they can implement their plan. The team is preparing thoroughly and responsibly, knowing that a strong opponent awaits them.
"I think the most important thing is to implement our own game plan. As I mentioned, we respect our opponent; we will have to be ready for the details and work hard,” said the coach.
He also stressed that important information has been conveyed to the players.
"Of course, we have given the players information about the strongest sides of "Žalgiris," which they have a lot,” said D. Healy.
"We know that tomorrow will be a tough match. We have been preparing all week. All players are looking forward to this match. And we hope to reach the next stage,” said defender Ethan McGee.
Didn’t have time to get to know the city
When asked about Vilnius, the coach recalled 2021, when he didn't get to know the city due to quarantine restrictions. This time, the Belfast club's delegation has landed in Vilnius and will soon fly back on a charter flight.
"Last time we didn't have the opportunity to get to know Vilnius better. This time we also arrived only today, Wednesday, and we will fly home again after the match,” the coach shared.
Nevertheless, he emphasized that the atmosphere between the clubs is always respectful.
"I can assure you that we are welcomed here with respect. There is mutual respect between the teams. We expect tough matches and a better result than in 2021,” said D. Healy.
The first match between "Žalgiris" and "Linfield" will take place on July 24 at 7 PM in Vilnius.
