The rapidly constructed National Stadium project continues to raise passions.
As reported by Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas, the entire complex is planned to have only 500 parking spaces, which may pose significant problems for event attendees.
"We invite people to come to the stadium on foot, by bicycle, or public transport," the "Verslo žinios" quotes the politician.
The published information raised concerns for Vilnius City Council member Aleksandras Nemunaitis, who suggested on social media to rename the stadium from National to Vilnius.
"The majority of people coming from the regions simply won’t have anywhere to park their cars. Even if they want to attend competitions or events – it will be difficult. This will naturally limit the stadium's audience and reduce its ‘national’ potential.
For the infrastructure around the stadium (essentially the access), the Vilnius City Municipality plans to allocate 35 million Euros. About another 10 million will be allocated for the Mammoth Park (the slope towards Žalgirio street). So we have the funds.
We could have anticipated a multi-story parking structure, for example, from the Geležinio Vilko street side. This wouldn’t have solved all the problems, but it would have been a rational step forward. Unfortunately, instead of real planning – there is a decision that again leaves some people out. If we want the facility to truly be *national*, we should have thought about accessibility for everyone,” wrote A. Nemunaitis.
